Prep your ingredients by washing and peeling the potatoes, slicing them thinly, dicing the onion, and mincing the garlic.
In a large skillet, heat over medium heat. Add the ground beef, diced onion, and minced garlic. Cook until the beef is browned and the onion is soft, about 7-10 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, half of the cooked beef mixture, and half of the creamy soup mixture. If using peas, sprinkle half of them now. Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients.
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for 45 minutes. Remove the foil, sprinkle cheese on top, and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Let the casserole cool for about 5-10 minutes before serving.
